Anyone been to Peru (cuzco or lima) recently?

Posted on July 8th, 2010 by admin

I am leaving for peru on thursday and I need suggestions for what to pack…I know the basics (pants, tops, etc…) but anything special that I might need? I am going to be there for eleven days but I have limited packing space. Thanks!

Let’s see. Lima and Cuzco are very different (kindda like New York and Denver). Lima is on the coast (pacific coast that is) and, since we are in the southern hemisphere, it is summer. So Lima is very hot, about 80°F, which, when added to the very high humidity, makes for very hot weather. Nevertheless, considering Lima is in the middle of the Sechura dessert, it basically never rains. So shorts, t-shirts, hat and sunglasses. Mind the sun, as you’ll be very close to the equatorial line and the sun’s rays fall straight on you and can seriously burn you.
Cuzco, on the other hand, is in the Andes Mountains with Machu Picchu already in the Amazon Basin. Cuzco is at an altitude of around10,000 feet above sea level, so the temperatures vary wildly during the day, from a sunrise of 35°F to a 70°F at midday. Again, the sun can seriously burn you (as to the closeness to the equator now you have to add the thinner air), so plenty of sunscreen lotion, hat and sunglasses.
However, this is also the rainy season in the Andes, so chances of rain are very high, so bring a rain poncho.
As a side point, Cuzco is showing partly sunny today with rain from tonight until Saturday. Lima, on the other hand shows sunny all week.

How safe is Peru? (20 Characters)?

Posted on July 8th, 2010 by admin

Miraflores, Lima, Peru. Can’t be THAT safe. I mean go down the road for 10 minutes and your in one really dangerous city, La Victoria. Then 5 minutes from that is Rimac River.
Rimac was and is the scariest/saddest place I have ever seen in my life…

I caught a taxi at Lima airport last year, another man jumped in, they took me and my girlfriend to the river area and forced me 3 times to withdraw money from ATM machines, they got $400USD, they would have got more if the Visa card had not maxed out for the day, that’s how safe it is. I tell this story as often as possible, this is my way of getting my revenge and it hurts the people of Peru and Lima. 2 men got $400USD from me but after 1yr of telling this story Peru has lost a lot more. The police did nothing, did not even look at the security videos from the banks. So I hope Lima is happy about this. If the govt of Peru give me my money back I will stop telling this story, sorry Lima but you need to get your act together and keep your city safe for foriengers.

What is the best and cheapest way to call Peru from USA? How much does it cost?

What is the best and cheapest way to call Peru from USA? How much does it cost?

If both parties sign up for a Skype account and have access to a computer, then you can call/video call for free. The person in Peru can go to an internet cafe and rent time on a computer for a few nuevo soles. Just go to skype.com and click "Get Skype". Several of the cafes in Peru already have Skype installed on their computers because of how many tourists there are in the area. There are also some phone calling centers where you can have the person in Peru call you, but this is more expensive. Both of these options require both people to set a date and time to talk or else they will not work. The person in Peru can also buy an international cell phone, but this is much more expensive. The great part about having the phone, however, is that you can make and receive calls at anytime. I hope this was of some help!

Brazilian food and Peruvian food? Can you tell me about them?

Posted on July 8th, 2010 by admin

I’m going out to eat with my boss and some colleagues, and they’ve allowed me to choose whether I want to eat Brazilian food or Peruvian food. I’ve never had either, but I tend to like most ethnic foods. Can you describe what each is like and tell me which one you think I should pick? Thanks.

I’ve not had Peruvian. As for Brazilian I’ve been to a few different Brazilian grill restaurants and one traditional Brazilian restaurant. The grill/bbq places tend to have a large buffet of salads and side dishes and then waiters bring around skewers of assorted grilled meats. This I love. Very rich flavors of beef, chicken, turkey, sausage, ham, etc. Some things are a bit odd like chicken hearts, but the beef are usually very rich and flavorful. If you are not a carnivore, do not attempt this. The salads are actually fairly benign by American standards nothing really scary but quite tasty. They have a rich black bean stew that I love (had this at the traditional restaurant too) that has chunks of meat in it. Rice, and some other neat things. And some interesting cold fruit drinks. I really do like the Brazilian I’ve had so I’d suggest that. Go with an appetite! But I’d love to try Peruvian some time.
