What are some good topics to talk about for the rainforest in Peru?

Posted on June 28th, 2010 by admin

I have to do a project for Spanish and I need to subtopics of the rainforest in Peru to talk about. Any ideas?

I just went to the Amazon in Peru during vacation last week, and it was amazing. I stayed at Posada Amazonas and it’s a lodge that passes on a good portion of its profits right back to the community. Talk about how tourism affects ecology, how the world needs to discover just how much the Amazon has to offer medicinally, how tourism can be conducted without depleting or debilitating the earth, how tourism can give back to the community.

Lima Miraflores Peru area where is best to get a colonoscopy and what is the price?

Posted on June 25th, 2010 by admin

Lima Miraflores Peru area where is best to get a colonoscopy and what is the approximate price? Would they speak some English there?

How does this price compare to USA prices and also what would the price be in USA?

How do Peru medical prices compare to USA medical prices for similar procedures?

Well, I don’t know how much it would be, but the costs are a LOT cheaper in Peru. I had my C-section there. The doctors and nurses are more attentive to you. I know that just a doctor’s visit is usually between 20 and 50 soles (7 and 15 dollars).

Also if you’re just curious and want to know, for example, your glucose and cholesterol levels which cost 5 soles each ($1.50), you don’t need to first go to the doctor, then get a doctor’s referral, wait a week for results and all of that. (I got my results the next day, depending on which tests you ask for.) You just go straight to the lab people. You don’t need prescriptions for things either. If you know what you want to get, you go to the pharmacy and get it that easily.

Some doctors probably would speak English there. Prices vary depending on which private clinic you go to.

Posted on June 21st, 2010 by admin

Do you have to show the Yellow Fever Vaccination certificate to travel from Lima, Peru, to the USA? Is it a requirement?

No you do not.

The yellow fever issue only comes into play for travelers to the jungle areas, like the Amazon basin — travelers to/from Lima do NOT need yellow fever vaccines.

What is the Best Travel guide for Peru?Any suggestions on Guides one should read or use during your trip?

Posted on June 18th, 2010 by admin

So many travel guides out there on peru that one does not not which one to use..in your opinion What is the Best Travel guide for Peru?Any suggestions on Guides one should read or use during your trip?

there is hard to find guidance there, even for a map
so be sure you take a travel guide with you, maybe even two ones
also, the schedules in travel guides might be different than what you find on the spot or they might be in renovation, closed etc. So either call them(if you know Spanish) or go EARLY.
I used Frommer’s Peru Guide because they give interesting comments

What’s the best tour company for holidays to peru and Bolivia?

Posted on June 16th, 2010 by admin

Hi,
My friend and i are going to go to Peru and maybe Bolivia in August and we’re trying to find the best deal. We’re looking to trek the Inca trail, spend a few days in the amazon and cycle down the most dangerous road in the world.
Can anyone recommend any tour operators for this? The cheaper the better but not to skimp on safety or quality. Or if you know a better way to do it that would be good too.
Thanks.

Hi. Trekking the Inca Trail in August is going to be tough because there is a quota and reservations that fill up long in advance. Still, some agencies might be able to fit you in. Generally, those are the more expensive ones. I can recommend my friends at Solandino (www.solandino.com), who once fit me and a group in for an August trip on short notice.

If you arrive in Cuzco without having previously arranged an Inca Trail hike, there are other great hiking options around Cuzco that can be organized on a moment’s notice. Salcantay is a nice hike, finishing in Machu Picchu. Also Choquequirao is becoming more popular, with a route that also finishes near Machu Picchu. My favorite hike in the area is Ausangate and Sibinacocha, but that doesn’t take you anywhere near Machu Picchu. There are dozens of agencies in Cuzco that can arrange these hikes for you for relatively cheap ($300). My friends at Solandino can do the same. The same agencies will also gladly arrange a jungle trip directly from Cuzco.

Getting to Bolivia from Cuzco is not that difficult. You can bus or fly to Juliaca, then overland to the border (I recommend Copacabana), then on to La Paz. In La Paz, on Sagarnaga street, there are also dozens of trekking agencies and everybody sells that biking trip down the mountain. Just take a good look at the bikes before you depart, inspect the brakes, the tires, the chain. Make sure everything is tight. Beware that in Bolivia, there are frequent road blockages due to strikes. When I was there a few weeks ago, many tourists were stranded in Coroico for several days. I had problems getting out of La Paz and back to Peru. It can be a headache.

If you have questions about particular agencies, or want to find recommendations, join the South American Explorer’s Club (www.saexplorers.org). They have a good clubhouse in Cuzco and are very helpful in assisting visitors with all of those questions, even before you leave.

How long does it take to fly from Texas to Peru?

Posted on June 8th, 2010 by admin

This feels like a dumb question, but I’m writing a story about a zoologist who lives in Texas but takes a job in Peru. About how long would the flight take take?

Well, it looks like it’s about 3350 miles… It would depend on what kind of plane you took. If you took a 747 and that cruised at about 575 mph, that’s approximately 5.8 hours. Add a bit for take- off/climb-out and descent/landing to the airport and call it about 6 and a half hours.

Hope this helps! Good luck with your story… = )
