Lima Hotels?

Posted on June 28th, 2010 by admin

We will be there dec 24 only for one night. We are thinking of the Miraflores or the Marriott ? Any recommendations ?

Miraflores is a great area to be in, plenty of cafes, fairly safe and clean.

The Marriot is opposite the Ocean Marriott close to the Parque Salazar and Larcomar shopping centre. If you are looking at home away from home in Lima, this would be a good choice. It’s a big hotel and I’d say more suited to business people … but it is fairly efficiently run. Generally it is considered one of the best hotels in the area.

I don’t know the Miraflores [ even though i've been several times to Miraflores ] but i thought there website was well presented :http://www.mira-park.com

How dangerous is going to Peru by yourself?

Posted on June 25th, 2010 by admin

I’m half Peruvian. But I dont look Peruvian at all. I have light brown hair with blonde, even pink lol. I’m barely light tan and so I don’t really blend in. I’m scared if I’ll be a target, I’m only sixteen. Will I be ok? I’m staying in Miraflores, Lima, Peru with my grandparents. Any advice? And I head that terrorism was returning there…

I wouldn’t worry about your physical appearance that much. One of my closest friends is Peruvian and she’s a blonde. The only thing that has "tourist" labeled all over it is your pink hair. One of the biggest lessons you should learn as a tourist is to never attract attention to yourself. As such you should:

A. Dye that bit of pink hair you have.

B. Speak Spanish in the local form.

C. Refrain from wearing "bling" or other things that you really don’t need. If you don’t flash any valuables, you shouldn’t have to worry. Petty crimes occur everywhere. The trick is to avoid them. Don’t attract attention to yourself and you should be fine.

You’re 16 and that troubles me a bit. Are you going alone? I think its in your best interest to have someone go with you, preferably older. This is not to say you’re not a responsible young woman, but the fact is that you can be a target based on your age. Keep your age quiet unless it is really necessary for you to say it.

Miraflores is nice. I doubt you’ll have trouble. Just get home before night sets in.

Terrorism. I doubt it. You might be referring to Sendero Luminoso, but I haven’t heard of them making a comeback. I doubt you’ll be dealing with any of those things. That was big years ago, but now, Peru is relatively safe and stable. No major problems. Just use your common sense.

Advice? I don’t think you need much really. You’re going to be around Lima. So have a great trip and don’t worry, you will be safe. Make friends with some locals through your grandparents. Hope you have a great time!

Things to do in Lima, Peru?

Posted on June 18th, 2010 by admin

I am traveling to Lima, Peru (Miraflores district) from Christmas well into January, and as a senior in college with 5 other friends going, wanted to know some appropriate things for us to do in the area. Machu Picchu is already on the list – I’m looking for good restaurants, nightclubs, beaches, etc. Thanks!

You can do a lot.
Miraflores is the in place to go. You can go to "El puente de los suspiros" which is a popular lover’s/romatic place. There are also plenty of restaurants to try "Anticuchos", "Ceviche" or other typical food. A few of the restaurants have folkloric/musical shows which can be in Miraflores or a taxi away…transportation is very inexpensive. There are also a few places where you can get souveniers like the main park there…watch your wallet. The beaches nearby are great but crowded with lots of new surfing classes or equipment rentals. The best beaches are out by the panamericana (Pan-American road), however, 1hr+ or so by car. I hope this helps a little

Taxis or Private Guide in Lima?

Posted on June 16th, 2010 by admin

I am traveling to Lima on my own for one day, and I want to move among el Centro to Larco Herrera Museum, the Indian Market on La Marina Ave, Miraflores and Barranco districts but can’t afford the $12/hour quote I am getting from tour guides. Is it safe to hail taxis from place to place and then back to Callao where my cruise ship docks? Thanks.

Although is cheaper to hail taxis from one place to another is not to safe, There are so many police reports of tourist being assaulted or robbed by taxi drivers.

I you are going to a hotel tell them to call a formal taxi service (like Taxi Seguro or Cinco estrellas), They might charge you S/ 20 nuevos soles (peruvian currency) per hour, that means $10 or less BUT
1st, make someone who speak spanish call them
2nd, the person who calls them NEVER will not say EVER that you are a tourist. Because they will charge you the $24.00
3rd, there are so many places to visit so you must return several times to Peru for visit all we have.

Have a nice day y buen viaje!!

What type of area is the Miraflores section of Lima Peru?

Posted on June 8th, 2010 by admin

Is it a bad area? I understand that is the same area that Jordan van der Sloot rented a hotel in. Is it a seedy area or an up-scale tourist area?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100604/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/lt_peru_van_der_sloot

What type of activities are in the Miraflores section of Lima peru for a tourist to do?

No it is not a bad area. I hope that scum van der Sloot gets what’s coming to him in Peruvian prison. It’s an upscale part of Lima, one of the nicer areas, and probably the best place for tourists to stay since there are lots of good hotels and restaurants, green parks and good shopping and nice views of the ocean.
