Is there a rainforest close to Cuzco, Peru?

Posted on July 14th, 2010 by admin

If so, what is it, how close is it, and how do you get there? Thanks!!!

You can go to Manu driving van, but it takes 12 hours or so, it shoul be taken with a travel company. Or you can try downhill of Abra de Malaga which is paved roadway and it turns out cheaper, you can get Machu Picchu by this route, beautiful landscapes. about 7 hours driving van, then 2 hours and finally 10 minutes by train (the other side of Machu Picchu).Rainy season is starting, there could be some landslides, find a right travel company like:

Pre-Columbian Art Museum in Cuzco, Peru

Posted on July 12th, 2010 by admin

Hall of gold and precious metal crafts, jewellery in bone and shell, thematic showrooms of a variety of cultures including the Formative epoch, Nazca, Mochica, Huari, Chimú, Chancay, and Inca culture. Special hall of wooden sculptures. Colonial painting hall.
The collection of 450 master pieces date from 1250 BC to1532 AD.
The building synthesizes the urban architecture of the imperial city begging with segments of an Inca wall still preserved in its structure, up to the republican balconies overlooking the patio.
The making of photo’s was allowed. So I didn’t passed up this chance

packing for a trip to cuzco lima?

Posted on July 11th, 2010 by admin

I live in Florida and am going to spend a little bit of time in Cuzco. I will be there between the 29th of July and the 11th of August. I have no clue what to pack! I just have no idea what to expect. If you know, or have had any of those " damn I wish I had…", let me know what you wish you wouldn’t of forgotten. Also, do I need any vaccinations?

For Cuzco, you will need warm clothes, especially at night. It is the middle of winter here in Peru. I would suggest you leave space in your baggage to bring back some things, especially those made from alpaca. You will need all of the ¨little¨ things you need in Florida, but remember that the electricity in Peru is 220 volts. An electrical converter might be necessary. Vaccinations are not required and, unless you are traveling to the Amazon area of Peru, not needed.

Anyone been to Peru (cuzco or lima) recently?

Posted on July 8th, 2010 by admin

I am leaving for peru on thursday and I need suggestions for what to pack…I know the basics (pants, tops, etc…) but anything special that I might need? I am going to be there for eleven days but I have limited packing space. Thanks!

Let’s see. Lima and Cuzco are very different (kindda like New York and Denver). Lima is on the coast (pacific coast that is) and, since we are in the southern hemisphere, it is summer. So Lima is very hot, about 80°F, which, when added to the very high humidity, makes for very hot weather. Nevertheless, considering Lima is in the middle of the Sechura dessert, it basically never rains. So shorts, t-shirts, hat and sunglasses. Mind the sun, as you’ll be very close to the equatorial line and the sun’s rays fall straight on you and can seriously burn you.
Cuzco, on the other hand, is in the Andes Mountains with Machu Picchu already in the Amazon Basin. Cuzco is at an altitude of around10,000 feet above sea level, so the temperatures vary wildly during the day, from a sunrise of 35°F to a 70°F at midday. Again, the sun can seriously burn you (as to the closeness to the equator now you have to add the thinner air), so plenty of sunscreen lotion, hat and sunglasses.
However, this is also the rainy season in the Andes, so chances of rain are very high, so bring a rain poncho.
As a side point, Cuzco is showing partly sunny today with rain from tonight until Saturday. Lima, on the other hand shows sunny all week.

How far is it on the Incan trail from Cuzco to Machu Pichu?

Posted on July 3rd, 2010 by admin

inca trail starts in the 80 kilometer or so, and machu picchu is around the 120 or 130, so it is around 40 to 50 km, you do it in about three to four days. Of course, cusco is in kilometer cero

What should I bring to Wear in Cuzco, Peru?

Posted on June 30th, 2010 by admin

I’m going to Cuzco in June. How’s the weather like?

Cuzco is dry during June, so you won’t see any rain (scratch off the umbrella). During the daytime you will start off well covered and as soon as the sun rises (wich takes some time because there are mountains around you), you’ll start to take off your Jacket, then your scarf, then your sweater around your waist (just in case a big cloud passes by) and at that point you’ll be fine in jeans & T-Shirt until the sun comes down again (from 10 am to 4 pm it’s OK).

At night time is an other ball game, it gets freezing cold out there and, believe me, some XXL Nylon pantyhose can come in handy if you don’t bring along your Long John underware. Your top part wont be the problem because you have many things to wear, but only corduroy pants won’t do the trick.

Take along your hicking boots, jeans, corduroy pants, T-Shirts, Long John’s, a winter shirt and a good winter jacket. The rest you can get it cheap in Lima or Cuzco, beautifull inka designed socks, scarf, sweaters, gloves and Chullo (Inka hat).
