Traveling to Arequipa and Cuzco in July. I’m planning on taking bus to Arequipma from lima, and was hoping to?

Posted on June 25th, 2010 by admin

take a train from Arequipa to Cuzco. Has anyone done this recently?

I took the bus but not the train. Bus service in Peru is excellent although you will have a slight problem in Lima. There is no central bus station there, so you have to know exactly which bus you are going to take, the time it leaves, and then negotiate with a taxi driver to take you there. Taxi drivers in Peru will always ask a higher price than they will accept. It will be a long train trip. The train runs somewhat slowly. But it is very popular with tourists. I think you might have to go to Puno to catch the train to Cuzco. I do not believe there is service currently from Arequipa. The bus from Arequipa to Puno is good. Runs about every hour and it is not a long trip. I do not recall how regular the service is between Puno and Cuzco. It might be only every other day.

The railroad has a web site you can check.

Enjoy your trip. Peru is fun and inexpensive. Find out about a bed bus. I think they run between Lima and Arequipa. I took the bus the other way from Arequipa to Lima.

I’m looking to purchase domestic flights within Peru – any recommendations on websites to book through?

Posted on June 21st, 2010 by admin

Flights to book:

lima to arequipa
arequipa to cusco
cusco to lima

Try Aerocondor or LAN Peru.

Aerocondor seems a bit ´capricious´and may delay ro cancel flights while LAN Peru has many more choices. Aerocondor has single-person offices in the US in Florida; Lilia Moreno can help if you chose to go this method.

For the best possible help, let Johanna Tueros at Fertur Peru (or one of her assistants) in Lima make your reservations; fantastic person and the cost is probably less than doing it yourself. She can also arrange your transfers to and from the airport if you wish but the Green taxis are usually ´´ok.´´

AREQUIPA – Aeropuerto Internacional Alfredo Rodriguez Ballón – Segunda ciudad

Posted on June 19th, 2010 by admin

how do I apply to get my certificate of baptism from Arequipa Peru (Catholic)?

Posted on June 18th, 2010 by admin

If you are a member of a congrigation and you know what city you were baptized in, you can tell the parrish center and they can contact your original parrish for you. Believe me, the Catholic Church keeps paperwork. With a couple of phone calls they will be able to get it for you. I know because I had to do the same thing, only my original parrish no longer existed at all and they had to track down my certificate! Took a couple of weeks, but I got it. Best of luck!

Questions About Visiting Arequipa?

Posted on June 8th, 2010 by admin

I am interested in traveling to Arequipa, Peru this or next month and had a couple of questions.

I’ve been to Arequipa before, speak fluent spanish and familiar with Peru so is it recommended to go on a Tour of Arequipa or would it be ok to visit the attractions on my own schedule?

For those of you who have gone on a tour and where satisfied, please recommend the tour company and supply the website as well to check them out.

I know there is the Sta. Catalina, Colca Canyon but what else is there to see?

Also, is March-April a good time to visit Arequipa or is there a more adequate month?

Thanks in advance for the help and major points to the person who can answer all my questons! ;)

Hi! We visited Arequipa and loved it. We spent one day pounding the pavement on our own within the city to see the sights within walking distance. It was easy and convenient. Sta Catalina was amazing. We also went to the museum where they have the mummies retrieved from the mountaintops (grim-they were child sacrifices-but the exhibits were really interesting and fascinating). I’d recommend a good guidebook to plan that part of your trip, like Lonely Planet. Wikipedia has good info on sightseeing too: http://wikitravel.org/en/Arequipa#See

We did do one of the open-top bus tours that we bought right on the main square. I can’t remember the name, but all the tours went to the same places. It was a 4-hour tour and we saw lots of interesting stuff that we wouldn’t have seen on our own. It goes on a tour of the outskirts of the city to places tough to get to on your own. The only goofy stop was the Alpaca factory store (merch, anyone?) but even my jaded self found a great deal on a sweater! It wasn’t too expensive either, maybe less than $20 per person? The guides were good. The places with extra admission were inexpensive and worth it too.

As for weather, I think it’s pretty much always the same. It was mid-upper 70’s (F) and bright, bright, bright sun. Nights were a little chilly but no jacket required, just some sleeves and long pants.

Other than that, you know the rules about altitude if you’ve been to Peru-take it easy and drink lots of water and wear sunscreen!

We didn’t go to Colca Canyon, because we weren’t planning to go to Arequipa in the first place (another part of our trip got canceled last minute so we picked the first place outta Cusco with cheap airfare!) but everyone we met loved it. You should plan two days for that one, from everything I heard.

Enjoy your visit.
